Statement
|
We endeavour to
minimise our impact on the environment. All the
wood is locally sourced, the majority of which is a
by-product of woodland management. The finish is
achieved by natural oils which are non toxic. The
packaging is manufactured from recycled card. We
produce very little waste and most of this is burnt
to keep us warm during the winter!

Technical |
|
Branching out
shapes are made from planks of 10mm hardwood. The
shapes are cut from a single piece of wood, by
matching the grain it is possible to place the
shapes back into the original place, just like a
natural jigsaw.
The trays and
shapes are designed to cope with normal humidity
conditions of 8-12%, greater variations can cause
slackness or over tightness of connectors.
Connectors have small stress relieving cuts to
increase the spring and tolerance of the wood.
The pieces are
cut out by using a laser cutter, giving the
necessary accuracy. This technique leaves a slight
taper on each piece, resulting in one side of the
pieces being slightly larger than the other. An
inevitable consequence of using natural materials is
that
there will always be slight variations, we hope that
the beauty of the wood makes up for any loss in
mechanical accuracy.

It is unlikely
that the ‘closed’ pieces -circles, triangles or
squares will break, but the open ended pieces -
halves and curves are more delicate, stress placed
on opposite ends may test their tolerances too
far..
The connectors
are more likely to need replacing with time as they
do an enormous amount of work in holding the shapes
tightly. Please be careful, especially when taking
models apart as twisting can place a huge amount of
strain on the grains of the wood.
For an
introductory period we
will replace any broken pieces if they are sent to
us with a note as to how the damage was sustained
and with a stamped addressed envelope for return.

Upkeep |
|
Branching out
has an oil finish that can be further polished and
upkept by wiping the shapes with ordinary furniture
wax or a finishing oil (Danish oil is recommended as
you don't have to get bits of wax out of corners).
Areas which contain high
levels of temperature and water should be avoided
such as radiators and bathrooms. Things such as dogs and unruly
humans can also have a detrimental effect on this
product, we will be able to supply replacements.

Additional
pieces are constantly being designed and will be
available in the near future. Particularly
connectors which are stronger and bulkier as well as
some which are finer but more delicate. This will
allow more shapes of a more elegant nature to be
constructed.
